Sustainable Roads Initiative
The objective of the Sustainable Roads initiative is to provide a web based aide memoir for any industry professional involved in the planning, design, construction, maintenance and demolition of roads. The Sustainable Roads website has been developed by the Association for Consultancy and Engineering (ACE). Its content has been prepared collaboratively by construction industry professionals for construction industry professionals.
The Sustainable Roads website is based on a wiki format and is moderated by a team of industry experts representing ACE member firms.
ACE is a business association representing the interests of more than 800 consultancy and engineering businesses operating across the construction sector. ACE members employ more than 100,000 UK based professionals.
This initiative forms part of a larger Sustainable Development Strategy which is being lead by a steering group comprising the Institution of Civil Engineers (ICE), the Association for Consulting and Engineering (ACE), the Civil Engineering Contractors Association (CECA), CIRIA and the Construction Products Association (CPA).
Acting in a coordinated way, the Sustainable Development Strategy steering group will help to lead the civil engineering sector move towards a more sustainable future and to enhance still further its contribution to a more sustainable built environment. The group’s vision is for the civil engineering industry and profession to play its full role in the creation and maintenance of sustainable communities in harmony with their natural environment.
Underpinning this vision are four strategic aims which will guide the groups approach to pursuing sustainable development in civil engineering:
- Promote strong leadership within civil engineering;
- Embed the principles of sustainable development into everyday work activities and decision making;
- Build capacity for sustainable development in the industry and profession; and
- Create and influence a policy framework that demands more socially and environmentally responsible behaviour.
